You'll likely need to call your current carrier and ask for a “network unlock” to have your phone unlocked. Most often a phone call, a visit to their webpage or one of their retail stores is required to start the unlocking process.
For most providers, fully paid-off phones can be unlocked within a year. If you're still making phone payments, your device will stay locked to your current carrier. Once it's paid off though, you can contact your provider to unlock it for you.
The IMEI is the serial number that uniquely identifies your mobile phone. In the event that your phone is lost or stolen, reporting the IMEI will completely block service to the phone. To access your phone’s IMEI for your own personal records, please dial *#06# on your phone’s keypad. The IMEI will be displayed on the screen.
